Winter Fuel Payments
The decision to means-test Winter Fuel Payments for Pensioners last month in Parliament has understandably caused a lot of concern. I want to ensure that those affected by this change are well informed about their options and know how to access support.
I know that there are pensioners in Nuneaton who are eligible for Pension Credit and Winter Fuel Payments, but have not checked, or are apprehensive about filling in the form. Me and my office are here to help with any queries or applications.
I am also very aware that the thresholds for Pension Credit are challenging, and I have contacted the Chancellor, Rachel Reeves asking her to consider raising the threshold, as well as tapering the funding so that those missing out by a small margin would still receive some additional support. I have also recommended changes to make the application easier, and I will continue to campaign for a fairer benefit system that meets the needs of those who are struggling.
In addition to this for the past month I have been working closely with BRANCAB, AgeUK and Parliamentary colleagues to ensure that we do all we can to support those pensioner’s that are in need. There is no shame in applying for the support you are entitled to. Support extends beyond Pension Credit, with the new Government bolstering support for schemes that offer both long and short-term support. This includes:
The Energy Company Obligation – A scheme which supports those living in Private, Private Rented or Social Rented properties to make their home more energy efficient. Eligibility is dependent on Local Authority, however homes with an EPC rating below D may be eligible for some form of support. For people in the Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council Area further support is available here (https://www.nuneatonandbedworth.gov.uk/private-housing/energy-matters/3). North Warwickshire Residents are advised to contact the Local Authority for further information. This support may also be available through your energy supplier.
The Great British Insulation Scheme – A scheme available to those living Private or Private Rented properties to help insulate their home. Generally available to those whose home has an EPC rating between D and G and in Council Tax bands A-D, this scheme is part administered by the Government. Further information and the link to check your eligibility can be found here (https://www.gov.uk/apply-great-british-insulation-scheme).
The Warm Home Discount Scheme – A scheme which supports those on low incomes with higher-than-average energy costs. Funded by Government, this money is paid directly to your energy supplier and eligibility is automatically calculated. If your supplier provides you with Gas and Electricity you may be eligible to ask that the discount is put towards your gas bill. You can contact your energy supplier to find out more. Those in Park Homes may be eligible for the Park Homes Warm Home Discount, which can be applied for here (https://charisgrants.com/partners/park-homes/).
The Cold Weather Payment – A scheme which supports those on low-incomes or in receipt of certain benefits in managing the cost of Cold Weather. Paid for each 7-day period of Cold Weather, defined to be a period where the average temperature is below zero degrees, eligibility is automatically calculated, though those receiving unemployment support may have to contact the Jobcentre Plus if their circumstances have or are likely to change.
The Household Support Fund – A scheme, which the new Government has extended for its fifth year, aimed at providing support to households struggling with the Cost of Living. Funding is aimed at anyone who is vulnerable or is struggling. You do not have to be in receipt of benefits or any additional support to qualify. For more information or to apply please contact your Local Authority for more information (https://www.nuneatonandbedworth.gov.uk/contact-us/contacting-visiting-us) or (https://www.northwarks.gov.uk/contact).
Third-Party Support - Several different energy companies are working hard to support customers, including: OVO, Boost, Eon, Eon Next, EDF, Scottish Power, Octopus, Shell Energy, SSE and Utilita. British Gas offers a £2,000 grant to customers of any energy provider through the British Gas Energy Trust (https://britishgasenergytrust.org.uk/grants-available/), however ask that customers of other suppliers apply for support through their supplier first.
